Preventative anti-wrinkle treatments…. This is quite a controversial topic within the cosmetic space & I feel it is not always addressed in the most ethical way. As I have stated in previous blogs, the topic needs to be looked at from the perspective of what is happening within the face as we age.
Aging of the face happens on multiple plains. We have a loss of collagen and elastin which impacts our skin’s elasticity. The fat pads within our face shrink and descend, which results in a lack of facial volume & structural support. As we age, we also go through bone resorption, which can also result in a lack of facial volume creating a sunken in look.
So, from the perspective of preventative anti-aging, we would be mainly focusing on combating the loss of collagen and elastin within the skin. Looking after your skin is the KEY to prevent anti-aging. First and foremost, daily spf and a good skincare routine. Don’t overcomplicate things, you do not need a 12-step skincare routine to have healthy glowing skin. You need a gentle cleanser, to double cleanse of an evening. Followed by a peptide serum & nourishing moisturiser. If you are in your late 20’s or are acne prone you can use a retinol serum 2-3 nights per week instead of your peptide serum. During the day a stable vitamin c serum, followed by a moisturising spf. This is all that is required, don’t fall into the trap of over consuming. Less is more!
Treatment wise a series of either microneedling, laser genesis, lactic acid peels, skin booster injectables or rejuran. These will assist with cell turn over and stimulate collagen & elastin production. If you are consistent with the above treatments and skincare you will not need injectable treatments until you begin to see static line formation. Once you begin to see static line formation (wrinkles at rest), then it is time for anti-wrinkle injectables. You do not want to let these lines get too deep, otherwise they can be tricky to treat. However you do not need injectable intervention until these lines have begun to form.
